Your own placard is the authority. You will find it on the printed on the tire sidewall, next to the pressure range. Where it disagrees with this page, it wins. Match or exceed the size, load index, speed rating and construction class it gives, and use its pressure figure rather than anything printed on the tire.

What changes on this bike

Every HSD uses 55-406 but the tire model changes with the build: Big Apple on the P5i and P10, Big Ben with ECE-R75 certification on the S00, and Big Ben Plus with Green Guard on the S9i.

Tern's limit is 180 kg gross on the P5i, P10 and S00 and 190 kg on the S9i; Schwalbe rates the 55-406 Motion Big Apple at 95 kg per tire and only E-25, so the Big Ben builds have more margin for a passenger on the rack.

Fitting Big Apples to an HSD that left the factory on Big Ben or Big Ben Plus gives up the E-50 rating, so match the original model rather than just the size.

No tires listed against this fitment yet. Product specifications are published from each manufacturer's own data and that work is not finished for 55-406. Match or exceed every figure in the table above and you cannot go far wrong.

Common questions

What size tires does the Tern HSD take?
It runs 55-406. The exact fitment for your bike is on Printed on the tire sidewall, next to the pressure range.
Can I fit a cheaper tire to a Tern HSD?
Only at 55-406 or better. That is the figure to hold: a tire below the load index, the speed rating or the construction class is not a cheaper one, it is the wrong one.
