How we choose what to recommend

A fitter's gloved hands on a car tire

By purpose, never by quality. Every tire we put in front of you has already cleared your vehicle's own load index, speed rating and construction class, because that filter runs first and nothing gets past it. After that each heading is a question about how you use the thing, and the pick under it is the tire its own manufacturer builds and sells for that job. We do not score them against each other and we do not name a winner.

The filter that runs first

Your vehicle was type approved on a specific load index, speed rating and construction class. A tire below any of the three is not a cheaper option, it is the wrong part, and no amount of good grades elsewhere changes that.

That comparison is mechanical and it runs before anything else. It is checked twice by two separate pieces of code that do not share a line between them, because a safety check that calls the thing it is checking is not a check at all.

There is one exception in the whole system and it is in the law rather than in our convenience: a winter tire may sit below the original speed rating. Never below the load index, never below the construction class, and the card says so wherever it applies.

Why the headings are questions

A ranked list needs a scale, and a scale needs evidence we do not have. We do not run tire tests, we do not collect ratings from readers, and an aggregate nobody measured is an invention however confidently it is printed.

What we do have is what each manufacturer says its own tire is for, and the measured grades on the label. So the questions are about you: range, noise, wet braking, winter, budget, punctures, load, mileage. The pick is the tire built for that answer.

Where nothing in your size is built for a particular job, that heading is simply absent. It is not filled with a runner-up.

What decides a tie

Stock first, then price. Nothing else, and never margin.

No product wins twice on a page, so you see a spread rather than one favourite listed five times.

Position on a page has never been for sale on this site and will not be. If that ever changes it will be labelled as advertising in the markup and to you, and it will not displace an exact fitment from the top.

Where the numbers come from

Fitment data comes from the vehicle manufacturer's own published specifications, with two dated sources per fitment and the sources printed on the page.

Product data comes from EPREL, the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling, where every supplier is required to register every size before selling it. That is where the load indices, speed ratings and label grades on this site come from, and each one carries its registration number.

Neither of those is standing next to your vehicle. The placard in your door jamb is, and where it disagrees with us it wins.

Common questions

Do you get paid to recommend a tire?
No. Position is not sold and the tie-break is stock then price.
Why do you never name a winner?
Because we do not have the evidence to. We have what fits, what it is built for, and what it scored on the label.
Why does one heading have nothing under it?
Because nothing in your size is built for that job. We would rather show you a gap than a runner-up.
