BMW i4 tyres

The BMW i4 runs one fitment, 255/35 R20 97Y XL. XL is not optional here; it is what the car was type approved on. It is staggered: a 255 section at the front and a 285 at the back, so the two can never be swapped across axles and the rear goes first.
Every fitment
| Generation | Trim | Wheel | Tyre size | Load index | Speed | Construction | Marking | Pressure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 onwards | M50 | 20in | 255/35 R20 front, 285/30 R20 rear | 97 | Y | XL | ★ | 36 psi |
Your own placard is the authority. You will find it on the the driver's door jamb, on the lower B-pillar. Where it disagrees with this page, it wins. Match or exceed the size, load index, speed rating and construction class it gives, and use its pressure figure rather than anything printed on the tyre.
What changes on this car
Staggered, and on a saloon that is the detail that catches people out: a 255 on the front and a 285 on the rear are not interchangeable and cannot be rotated between axles.
BMW mark their own original equipment with a star, and on this car the marked tyre is tuned for a chassis carrying a battery the petrol 4 Series does not have.
A 30 profile on a 20 inch rim leaves barely 85mm of sidewall at the back. That is a lot of wheel and very little air, and potholes find it.
No tyres listed against this fitment yet. Product specifications are published from each manufacturer's own data and that work is not finished for 255/35 R20. Match or exceed every figure in the table above and you cannot go far wrong.
Where these figures come from
- Michelin's own vehicle fitment tool, michelinman.com/auto/browse-tires/by-vehicle (2023 i4 M50, 255/35R20 XL 97Y front and 285/30R20 XL 99Y rear)
- Goodyear's vehicle finder for the 2024 BMW i4, giving the staggered 19 and 20 inch fitments
From more than one tyre maker's fitment data, independently. Neither is standing next to your vehicle, which is why the placard still wins.
Common questions
- What size tyres does the BMW i4 take?
- It runs 255/35 R20. The exact fitment for your car is on The driver's door jamb, on the lower B-pillar.
- Can I fit a cheaper tyre to a BMW i4?
- Only at 255/35 R20 97Y XL or better. That is the figure to hold: a tyre below the load index, the speed rating or the construction class is not a cheaper one, it is the wrong one.
- What pressure should a BMW i4 run?
- 36 psi cold on the fitment above, from the placard. Check it monthly and check it cold, because a warm tyre reads high and an underinflated one costs range every mile you drive.
- Do I need the ★ marking?
- Not legally. The ★ version can carry a different compound or an acoustic foam liner that the same tread pattern in the shops does not, so if the car is quiet now and you fit the unmarked version, expect to notice.
